Film club, May edition

Film club, May edition

A different type of YYC guide, as the only way I am traveling right now within the parameters of self isolation is around the world and beyond in my loungeroom, thanks to Ghibli and Coppola. I’ve been obsessed with film since forever, Friday nights at the Chan’s residence was movie night screening from Dad’s projector. Movies and movie soundtracks have been there for me through thick and thin. I’ve been compiling film lists from all periods of my life and there’s every type of coming-of-age from my Summer of 08, to classics from Film school 2012. May’s edition features some of my absolute favorites, easy to digest. Nothing brings people together more than film & art. Please excuse my IMBD film stills, I am still trying to figure out what I’m going to do with the layouting of this.

CHARLIE’S ANGLES (2000)

STARRING LUCY, CAMERON, DREW.

Can you get any more iconic. I also love 2000 nostaligia, and not to get soppy or anything but it was one of the first films in Hollywood that had a lead Asian actress, so for 8 year old me trying to fit in- the feeling of having someone who looked/and represented me on the big screen was kind of a big deal.

HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE, by STUDIO GHIBLI

ANIMATION.

If you haven’t aren’t familiar with Ghibli, this is a great introduction. I grew up watching Studio Ghibli, and as a child this was one of the first films that really captivated my imagination. All of the themes and storylines are always complex, and often dark. But this one’s a great one to get lost in.

Thank you, and I hope you enjoyed the month of May.

Next up, we have a guest edit by my friend Duc where we compile the June edition. Leave any comments, thoughts and suggestions.
